Things to do to avoid becoming a statistic:

1. Take rider safety course.
2. Buy an inexpensive used bike (like a Ninja 250) as your first streetbike.
3. Buy the most expensive helmet you can afford, also purchase good riding gear.
4. Ride for a year.
5. After a year, go purchase a new Ducati Monster. They are low enough seat height for you, and the 620M has very smooth power. Cost for the Monster 620 is about $7500 USD. Not expensive. Maintenance IS expensive.

If you don't want to follow all these steps, then call the local Duc dealership, and ask if they know of an experienced rider with a biposta (has a passenger seat) that would give you a ride.

Well, there's no reason why you should settle for the back seat - get in the drivers seat.

At 5'4" you probably have a height concern so I would probably suggest the Monster.

You can lower the front forks in the yolk (about 1/4 inch max - it effects the handling) and take your seat to someone that makes custom seats to have about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of foam cut out of the seat (probably cost you about $140.00 or so). If you need to lower the bike still, look up Works Shocks on the internet. They can build you a lowered shock for the rear for about $400.00 so you can probably get flat footed.

Look up Ducati Owners Group for your state and when you do get one, join the club and someone in it can probably help you lower the forks and install the shock.

Just because your female and of average height doesn't mean you can't have the bike of your dreams.

Used Duc's are a great deal but you should look into the cost of regular scheduled maintenence. Like most Italian transportation, it can be a bit pricey.

Ducati's V-Twin motor makes great power and the sound of it is really the best (and I don't mean Harley's either)

They are a great bike, very expensive for a first time rider. I suggest for all girl/women who are in your height & weight range.
The Kawasaki Ninja 250R Sport, it's light weight, 324 lbs. is very fast with a female friend of mine riding her's she went over 120 MPH on her's, get great fuel mileage about 50-65 MPG.

They cost less than 4k US. out the door new. Which means you could buy 3-4 of them for the price of one Ducati.
The rule is, all bikes need fuel every 120-160 miles. So everyone has to stop sometime.
Most people do not ride over 400 miles per week on any bike, unless they travel alot.
