According to the dealership, I had a leak in my steering rack assembly (on the invoice it says "Steering gear/rack") and in order to fix that, it's going to cost about 600 dollars in order to repair the leak. They also said that I needed to get an alignment (30 dollars), a lower ball joint (110 dollars), and because the power steering pump was making noises, they needed to do a power steering flush (99 dollars). In all, it's coming to a total of 1,000 dollars. This seems a little high but I don't know anything about cars so I told them to start the repair work. In case you are wondering, my car is a 2000 lincoln mercury sable and this work is being done at Tuffy's. Any help would be apprecidated!

no, that sounds about accurate, but so you know if you are replacing one ball joint on one side, the other will soon need to be replaced as well, might as well get it done while you are in there. It may not be bad, but if one is going bad the other is soon to follow. Anytime you have any work done on a steering part period you have to have an allignment afterwards, if you don't it will cost you a lot later on. Good luck

A 200o would definitely need a flush if it hasnt been done yet. As for the leak, it might be so but all you have to do there is add a little fluid now and then. I would have done the flush but passed on the leak fix, probably not bad enough to warrant that kind of money. Most cars leak something, and a little attention to fluid levels is all you need there. Alignment, yes, saves tires. I dunno about the ball joint after 6 years, ut i cant see the car. If you can, tell em to hold off the steering rack and get another opinion.

Wow they really got you. Always remember to ask to see the parts that were changed a good shop would keep them for you to see i have the same car and i had those repairs done for about half that including tie rods."Steering gear/rack" is about 215 with a 100 for the core - each ball joint is 50- and it they were doing the rack wouldnt they have to empty the fluid anyway??? so basically they got you for 600 in labor

i would say you got ripped off, heck, you could go buy a good rack and have some neighbor or someone put them on for you, also have someone check the ball joints for you,and as far as power steering needs flushed out, someone could do that for you,all they have to do is take off the pump and flush it out and put it back on.yes you were ripped off, just because you dont know anything about cars,i would guess you are a woman, and they prey on women.next time get a shadetree mech, they wont charge you near as much, and the work will be done just as good.good luck.

The pricing seems about right. If the seal was leaking on the rack then the only fix is total replacement. The rest seems to be in line with what should be done and the costs.

price seems a little high...but you told them to do the work so you are out of luck...best thing to do is get them to break the bill down by parts and labor..
call local parts house and price the parts yourself.
then on labor figure 55 to 70 dollars an hour labor charge..
after you figure this tell them you got prices from somewhere else and see if they will bring the price down for you

You don't need the power steering flush unless your system is contaminated. ask around .usually just look for leak to eliminate, caused by possible faulty gasket. add fluid and recheck

If it is a trusted dealer then there should be no problem, but it never hurts to ask for a second shop on major expenses.
