I'd like to hear some answers from black people on this one.

What you're saying rap is part of black culture but soul food isn't? I think soul food is more part of black culture than rap. Rap is just a youth thing that's been around for a couple decades- it's not actually synonymous than black culture- that's like saying that metal culture is synonymous with whites.

Watermelon is not racist; watermelon is good food!

Don't get too hooked on what is or is not a stereotype. If something offends you (rap OFTEN offends me), then that is enough. If something does not offend you, and you mean no offense when you mention it, then it is not racist. Go with your instincts; the PC crowd can drive you crazy in five minutes if you let them.

I agree but the answer is watermelon was slave food. Today's rap culture promotes and turns kids with potential to be the best into the worst society has to offer. Say anything bad about it and the argument is "there just expressing there rage" I say that is a ridiculous argument. MLK Jr. would slap them if heard the nonsense they promote. Today's rap culture has set blacks back 40 years. As if a wonderful tasting watermelon is the cause of stereotypes. How about using the N word as a form of greeting? I would say that is a reason to get upset.

First of all Hagtag or Mr. Happy we don not use hos and thugs to describe ppl of the black race do you know you sound stupid? any person can be a ho, thug no matter what race and for your question black ppl don't get offended by watermelon what we do get offended by is the idea behinf it which is a sterotype like black ppl eat chicken and black ppl can't swim. now if somebody use it in a racist way like" hey you black ppl ain't good for nothin but eatin watermelon and cleanin my house" or something like that then yeah that is very offensive don't you agree? it's the same as sayin white ppl smell like dogs and other sterotypical terms for white ppl. and trust black ppl do feel that rap sterotypes and terms are degrading, but you have to understand that that's what sell that's what young ppl want to hear alot of rappers will agree most are married and will never say those names to their wives, mother, grandmother etc... it's just for show and do realize more suburban white teenagers buy these degrading songs then urban youth and that's a fact don't believe me do some resarch then!

To Karen S. African American's come in all colors.

Back to the question...Using the word watermelon isn't racist. It can be offensive when referring Blacks because the way it was used against us in the past. Rap stereotypes are very offensive and we need to reconize that. I think some Blacks feel like if we use certain words (like the N-word) between ourselves that's fine but when others use it to attack us it's not ok.

Back in the day we were always seen as watermelon and chicken eating people. Rap is not my favorite either, but it is something that many blacks perceive as being of "our culture". It is something that we control. We could not control the image of us being watermelon eaters, stupid, lazy, etc. I am not offended personally by that in particular, but I can see why the image hurt us so much. It made us look stupid and people laughed at us.

It's only because THEY use the term thugs/ho's to describe people of their own race. Watermelon is not a term used by them, and therefore it is considered racist.

I mean how can watermelon be racist??? I love watermelon, but I would not get offended if I was called that by someone else! People are very quick to scream racism these days, because it's easier then dealing with, and accepting the truth!!!!

You're exactly right...being stereotyped as liking watermelon or fried chicken should be much less offensive than being stereotyped as a thug or criminal. Any self-respecting black person should be offended by both.

Actually, I find BOTH to be offensive.

Why only black eat chicken and watermelon?

Why black women and men got to be thugs and whores?

And Karen, sweetheart, not that it's any of your business, my avatar is brown, not pink, the same shade of brown as I am.

Happy?
