If the tomatoes don't ripen on the vine pick them and put them in a paper bag or on a window sill (paper bag is faster) and let them ripen. Then you can remove the seeds and dry them.

The only problem you may have is if the tomato is a hybridized variety many of the seeds will probably be sterile and the ones that do grow will probably produce fruit different than the plant it came from. If it's not a highly hybridized variety you might be OK. That's the reason they sell new seeds every year--because last year's seeds will probably be a dud. Sorry.

If the fruit on your plant is ripe (naturaly or forced) then the seeds should be 'viable' this means that the plant wants to make 'babies' and the seeds are ready. Remove them from the fruit and keep dry and out of light till you want to plant them again. Then you should have little 'baby' tomato plants all of your own!
This will continue the cycle..............

I stay in Southern Michigan too. The frost date right this is could 15 meaning which you mustn't plant gentle palnts till AFTER that date so which you're high-quality. it may be getting too warm to plant peas (I placed mine in on March 20 -- they are doing great ). i'm going to be planting many things from seeds this week. have exciting with the backyard.. As far as I know, as long as the tomato is still alive and hasn't been zapped by frost, go ahead and pick the fruit and remove the seeds, let them dry and store for next year!
