Litmus is a water-soluble dye extracted from certain lichens and absorbed on to filter paper. The resulting piece of paper becomes a pH indicator (one of the oldest), used to test materials for acidity. Blue litmus paper turns red under acidic conditions and red litmus paper turns blue under basic (ie Alkaline) conditions, the colour change occurring over the pH range 4.5-8.3 (at 25°C). Neutral litmus paper is purple in colour. The active ingredient of Litmus is called Erythrolitmin, and commercial litmus dye is chemically p-Dimethylaminoazobenzenesulfonic acid, sodium salt. Low pH value substances are called acids, and high ones are called alkalis. A solid Alkaline substance that cannot dissolve in water is called a 'base'.

To test the pH of some gases using litmus paper, wet litmus paper is needed. The gas dissolves in the water and thus the reaction can be seen.

The most common litmus reactions are when red litmus turns blue or blue litmus turns red. However, these aren't the only reactions. For example, Chlorine gas turns blue litmus paper white. (In Chemistry terms, we say that the litmus paper is bleached

Basically it's a specially treated paper that test the acidity level. The more technical explanation is listed below. Good luck with the homework.

It can if the component is an acid or a base. Litmus paper tests the pH of a liquid, and and strength of the acidity/basity of the solution can be used to find the concentration of the component.

Litmus paper is ordinary paper which has been soaked and dried. It was soaked in a chemical solution. After drying it will change color if put in a liquid. The color change will be blue if the liquid is basic. The color change will be red if the liquid is acid. Lemons are acid. Many soap solutions are blue or basic.
