Well you said you already have your passport in order. That's good. If you're staying for an extended period of time (like over a year) you'll need a visa or other special permit to stay that long. If it's just a vacation, don't worry about it.
Figure out now how you are getting from the airport to your hostel/hotel/whatever. Does the airport have a shuttle to take you into a city and from there can you walk? Or can you call a cab? I made that mistake before, walked forever.
If you're a student, bring your student ID. You can get discounts on lots of things. If you're not a student try a AAA membership or if you're a senior.
Be careful with your camera, mp3 player, anything electronic. For some reason when I went through the metal detectors and stuff at security checks, the power in my electronics got sucked dry. Only my regular battery powered things had any juice.
As for other things to bring with you, don't bring alot. Pack as light as you can. Most things you can buy little sample things of once you get there like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. Do bring a rain jacket or buy a small umbrella there, because you will get wet. It's a fact of life in Scotland. Clothes can be washed or sprayed with a little Febreze if they get a little stinky so don't pack your whole wardrobe.
I recommend buying a money belt to wear under your clothes to carry things like cash (but no coins), credit cards, debit cards. Don't bring travelers checks!! I can't stress that enough. They'll screw you at the banks and good luck finding anyone else who will cash them. I recommend sticking with a debit card. Works just like cash at stores and can be used at ATMs. Just watch out for bank fees, they can be a killer.
Well that was a rather extended answer! Hope you found at least some of it helpful!

Make sure you have plenty of money, as there are some great sights here. (Assuming it is Edinburgh you are travelling to as it is in this section), here are some sights you have to see.
Edinburgh castle for one. An amazingly historic castle over looking princes street gardens (also a place you will have to make sure you see, perhaps a picnic or something!) that you will just HAVE to go visit
Edinburgh Zoo
Holyrood palace (The Queens official residence in Scotland)
Next to Holyrood Palace is Arthurs Seat, an extinct Volcano (costs nothing, but you'll have to take a walk up there. You get an amazing view)
Take a walk down the Royal Mile - and make sure you stop at Mary Queens Close. A paid tour around this historic close that has an amazing story behind it - hundreds of years ago, the government locked up a number of people down that alley in order to contain a disease that was affecting a number of people, men, women and children.
Anyway that's just a few places I reckon you shouldn't miss while here in Bonnie Edinburgh. Thought that would be some good preparation! - So bring lots of spending money!
I hope you have a great time!

Tokyo! Please its amazing. You will seriously never experience somewhere like Tokyo :] Shangai and Beijing are also amazing. If you want somewhere for breathtaking scenery and experiences New Zealand, my family spent 2 months on holiday out there and it wa just brilliant, If you go, go and see the Maori people. Italy is also really beautiful, especially in the Vatican City and Rome has great shops too! I do like Paris aswell and i am a fan of Vegas :) Also i visited Australia when i was 8 and that was amazing too. And South Africa was brilliant, expecially with the tribes , my family and i went to a tribal dinner and there was all sorts of dancing and things going on too so that was good aswell :)

Make sure that your passport is in order. You don't need shots or anything like but I would make sure that your tetanus shot is up to date. Do some research and figure out what you want to see while you're there. Make sure that you pack your camera and charger for it. Pack a spare duffle bag for items that you buy over there.
Have fun!
