what's a good method, procedure or activities that can be helpful in teaching children in an elementary school? Can the school/home environment affect the way a child learns?

The trick is not to overstimulate the students but keep them interested. Hands on learning is a great way but it also gives the class freedom to move around. You have to be sure the students are responsible enough for that.
I guess it depends on the students and how you know them and if they are respectful of your teaching.
Once you know that then more freedom to move around is generally okay. I find the best way for students to learn is to visually teach them. Writing things down bores them to death.
Sometimes you haven't got much of a choice though.

It is always best for children to learn things for themselves so set activities where the children are finding things out rather than being told. Try and make the activities relevant to them. Yes the home/school environment can affect how a child learns if a child is unhappy in one area it will affect the other, likewise if their are problems at home e.g. financial, lack of space, lack of food, neglect these will affect the way the child develops as well as affecting their learning. Hope this helps - there are lots of good books full of teaching activities so try them for activity ideas.

All children learn differently. What works for one might not work for the other. What I do is when I teach a lesson I try to incorporate all five sences. That way if Billy is a visual learner, Mary is an auditory learner and Jose likes to touch /experiment with things, they are all given the opportunity to learn, the best way. So my suggestion is learning occurs through one of the five sences the more sences you incorporate into your lesson the better the outcome for learning to occur.

I'm a big fan of constructivism which incorporates small groups, experimentation, open debate. It's not practiced a lot because teachers are under so much pressure to keep tests scores up. But in a perfect world, constructivism would be taught in all classrooms because it enables a child to find the answer himself instead of churning out answers to questions he forgets the next day.
