I will be there only 1 week and I probably only have time to visit one other city. Which would you recommend and why?

I recommend Kyoto. Even though it is a 3 hour trip away, it is well worth it. It is the historical capital of Japan and has so much to offer. Tokyo is modern Japan and Kyoto is old Japan. You can see all aspects of Japan within these two cities. There is a lot to do there and many other interesting cities (Osaka, Nara) are near by if you have extra time. Good luck.

Osaka, Nagoya, and Kumamoto have desirable castles. Osaka's has been rebuilt or perhaps has an elevator interior. My personal well-known is Kumamoto fort. It had not in any respect been overtaken and replaced into the perfect bastion of old Japan. Kyushu is often missed to travellers, yet they have warm springs, desirable surroundings and a number of of different the oldest historic previous and perfect pottery in the country. Miyajima, close to Hiroshima is a desirable island it truly is amazingly photo worth. those are in basic terms some ideas

With only a week to spend, I'd pass on Kyoto as it's a bit far - 3 hours by bullet train: 6 hours round trip.

I'd stick closer to Tokyo. I recommend Kamakura which is an hour south of Tokyo. Kamakura was once the military governmental capital of Japan from 1192-1333. It's along the ocean and it has a number of fine temples and shrines. It also has a large outdoor Buddha Statue:

Two hours north of Tokyo lies Nikko a mountain town with very ornate shrines and beautiful natural scenery.

I've been to both a almost a dozen times. I like them both for their history, scenery, and sites.

Good luck!

Kyoto used be a capital of Japan for over 1000 years and have tons of historic air, and loved by many travelers. English information is everywhere, too. It's conveniently connected with Shinkansen line with Tokyo. It's a busy big city.
If you'd like to relax, try visiting Izu or Hakone. These towns are not so far from Tokyo and known for its rich natural hot springs with a great view of Mt. Fuji.

Okinawa if you live sun and fun. Misawa Japan, which is almost at the top of Japan, if you like alot of snow and snowboarding. I've been all over Japn, and Northern Japan definitly has the best food! Have fun.

Misawa, about 3 hours north of Toyko. Breathtaking!!! There's a lake called Lake Towada that's also an inactive volcano. There are also Japanese hot baths there. Be sure to practice w/chopsticks tho, there are certain places that do not have silverware.

Kyoto.

Or Osaka, for the tourist maybe, they both (Osaka and Tokyo) look the same, but they are different, culture, food and people.

Osaka people consider themselves as truly japanese, refined and educated.
