I see alot of condemning comments on here about FOX for being what many liberals seem to consider "a G.O.P. propoganda machine." And to their credit FOX does seem to lean right on most issues. Assuming this is the truth, my question is, so what? I challenge any rational person reading this to argue that a vast overwhelming majority of the media today is not extremely liberal. Reading the USA today or watching just about any other news channel is enough to make me sick, and I'm pretty moderate.
Does the right wing not deserve for their points to be presented? Is a lack of political balance not the most dangerous issue we are facing?

Now lets be fair and balanced. I agree that liberals are quick to acuse FOX of being biased while igoring the bias of most of the media. But also realize that FOX news is biased also, as it is in these news agencies best interest($$) to cater to certain population segements. My suggestion is that we all use sources from both ends of the spectrum to get through the political propaganda and make sound and well-informed judgements.

Thank you for your comments dinodino, although I guess it says something about where you stand on the spectrum if you consider the USA Today middle of the road. And i say that I am fairly moderate in that I attempt at all times to view both sides before drawing a conclusion; and that I am not so stuborn and set in my beliefs that I would not change my mind if confronted with contrary evidences.

Good point Don. But as it seems impossible to gather a whole truth from any one source, is a balanced diet of both sides not the best way to glean any amount of truth?

The idea that that the vast majority of the media today is extremely liberal is an absolute falsehood that is constantly repeated by right wing pundits and politicians in a concerted effort to keep people from knowing the truth and rejecting hard news from legitimate sources and it seems you buy into this crap.

I have no problem with Fox News's existence, but also it is perfectly legitimate to point out that it is biased towards Bush and often lies and distorts. The so what is that they lie and distort -- get it? You aren't "pretty moderate" if reading USA today "makes you sick".

USA Today is pretty middle of the road, the Network News is totally middle of he Road, Radio and Cable is dominated by Conservatives.

Lack of political balance is a problem -- in the House, the Senate and the White House, the Cabinet and the Supreme Court all being controlled by republicans. It isn't that big of a problem in the media.

What passes for liberal in one country may be considered conservative in another country. When you control the media, you get to frame the debate - you get to decide which guests and viewpoints form the boundaries of the issues you present. Do it enough, and anyone presenting a view outside of what you normally see in the media is considered an extremist radical. As you limit the viewpoints seen in the media, you can shift the political center ever further in one direction or another, until what used to be considered conservative is now considered liberal, and what used to be considered liberal is now considered extremist.

The fact is, all the major media are corporate run structures. None of them are democratically controlled. All are controlled in a top-down authoritarian manner. Control in these corporations is determined by who can afford to buy the most shares in the company. It just so happens the major shareholders in Fox are more "conservative" than the other news media, but all the major media are still controlled by the wealthy. You may be able to divide up the wealthy into the "liberal" wealthy and the "conservative" wealthy, but in the end, the points of view you see in the media will always ignore the viewpoints that could cause harm to the wealthy and limit their control of the system.

It may not seem that way if you read my answers to similar questions like yours. But you may be surprised to learn that I don't have a problem with Fox News being a conservative news network. My problem is that Fox News wants people to think that far from being a "biased" (read: liberal) network, it is the only "unbiased" (read: conservative) network. While this may be a plausible argument, it propagates the erroneous belief that conservatives don't have biases. Thus, Fox justifies this by repeating the "fair and balanced" credo and "We report, you decide." And a lot of people who watch Fox News fall for it hook, line and sinker.

And no, bird_brain_88, it is conservatives, especially social conservatives, who argue based on their emotions. Cases in point: Terri Schiavo, homosexuality, the fear of losing the right to keep and bear arms, the fear that God is being driven out of the public square, anything involving dissenting opinions on the Iraq war, abortion, and the death penalty.

Fox's recognition is due drastically to the reality that they are the only considerable information source that has any actual conservative slant by any ability. the different 4 are combating over the liberal inhabitants, on the same time as Fox has the monopoly on the conservatives. And it gets a foul rap, in part, because of fact the different 4 gang up on it. Rightfully so at circumstances.

You seem to be making a normative statement about how you FEEL about mainstream US media outlets and using that as your proof that non-Fox news is 'liberal'. Might I suggest that you you present something other than your feelings as proof because my feelings tell me that virtually ALL US media is horribly right wing. That said, however, I would never rely on something as subjective as emotions to prove my point. If you'd like to read more about this topic I can certinaly suggest several sources that challenge your assertion far better than I can do in the space provided here. I'd suggest you check out any of the sources I've listed below. You may agree with their assertions (as I do) or you may disagree, but please for the love of god base your argument on something substantive!

All mainstream press for years now has been right-biased.

They mindlessly report as truth every lie told by the current administration and refuse to hold their feet to the fire or to investigate anything.

Anyone could have read the Geneva Conventions and other treaties prohibiting torture and pointed out that the administration's argument that the people they torture aren't covered was a lie.

Similarly, they could have pointed out that Iraq wasn't behind 9/11.

Just two examples that spring to mind.

The only reality checks are foreign news, Bill Moyers, and the writers at, of all places Comedy freakin' Central, fer crissakes.

I agree with you. I am conservative but I usually watch fox new for their coverage of events. When I watch other stations lately I have seen alot of reporters going off about our government when they are covering a story of some dude that stole a car and was being chased by the police. Uh, well, I'd like to hear about the chase, not your views on Katrina or some other crap.

As stated in previous post on this forum. Many liberals, dislike anything or anyone that do not agree with them. Fox news shows have guest on that don't agree with their philosophy so they bash it.

They mix factual news and opinion a great deal, to the point that it is propaganda, or very nearly so. Check this website for more. The anchors are given talking points each day that they have to fit into their shows! How different is that from a state owned propaganda station?
