Seriously. This will probably cause some backlash, but I find Stephen King's writing predictable and boring. I have read several of his books, but I don't understand the obsession with his novels. I can always tell exactly what's going to happen 20 pages in and I hate that. Anyone care to enlighten me?

No thanks on the movie idea. The point is that I would rather read something of literary value such as Dostoevsky.

Stephen King has gone stale. It's no longer about quality for him because any piece of crap with his name on it will become a bestseller.
This happens to all best selling authors. If you want quality, read their early works and dump the later ones.
Carrie, The Stand, and Firestarter were some of King's best books. I haven't read any he's published in the past ten years because I know they are formula novels.
By the way, Tom Clancy has also gone stale. Any Andre Nortons after 1982 were stale. Any Heinlein after 1980. Happens to all of them. The early books of an author are usually the best because they had to work harder to prove their quality.

Well, not everyone likes the same thing. I like Stephen King's work, everyone likes a bit of thrill and horror nowadays. I agree with you saying that you can tell what would happen in each novel, that's why I only read his books once in a while to keep me away from boredom. Like Anne Rice, being into vampires and bloodsucking in all. Let me give a piece of advice, read other novels that you might like. I suggest Gregory Mcguire books.

Everyone has different tastes in books and movies. I'm sure there are things that you love but I hate, and visa versa. It's just all a matter of what types of books entertain you best. If that's not Stephen King then so be it. I'm personally not a big fan (they just aren't my types of stories), but I recognize his talent.
There's no reason to judge people who do like his work, either...

You have to be able to, and WANT to, identify with the characters in the books. Most of King’s characters are of a certain demographic. I’d say they have a small-town almost rural feel. If you can’t connect to the characters – then who cares what happens to them!

me. I find his books to usually be very predictable. he has a good formula for making money though and he is very prolific. but even when i like the beginning of one of his stories the end always fizzles - for example the book IT great suspense and build up which invariably lead to hokey sex scene and a giant spider monster neither of which I'd call original.

You've obviously never read "IT"
Easily his finest novel.
What about his shorter stories? "The Body." "Rita Hayworth and the Sharshank Redemption" "The Green Mile."
You can't honestly tell me that you knew where those stories were going 20 pages in!!!

I like all his books, so I can't really figure out what you're talking about.
He's got creative genius when it comes to thinking up creepy things.
I don't think he's any more predictable than any other author.

I've never been able to get into any of his horror books but I have read (and enjoyed) "Hearts In Atlantis"

I like the idea of his books for movies(stories), but I am like you, I can't get into them or they are too obvious from the beginning.

Perhaps you might like the movie adaptations of his books instead.
