Than is used when you want to compare things. For example: Eva Longoria is prettier than Teri Hatcher.

1) The word than is used moreso in sentences makeing a comparison of some sort.. For example... I would like it better to study English than to study German
2) Then is more like a continuation... For example: You can go to Berlin by train next week THEN you can take a taxi to her house.

I would prefer to ask a question rather THAN answering your question but THEN I also like answering difficult questions.
We could have something to eat now and THEN go to the theatre rather THAN waiting until later when the restaurants might be closed and we would THEN be very hungry.
Then is a time factor and than is a comparison

Than refers to the size of something. My hotdog has more mustard THAN yours.
Plus they both sound different and have different vowels.
