Modern drama began in approximately 1870 AD. Some say it ended in the 1950s or 60s, others say it still continues. There are new subjects and new points of view (versus previous dramatic structure), including themes relating to sociology, biology, and the scientific method. This does not mean that the play was about the biological workings of an organism; it means that the scripts were written in a much more scientific rather than religiously or culturally inspired way. It portrays the individual more as an object acted upon than as a freely acting subject.
