It is an electromagnetic switch or a relay that opens or closes when you turn on the contact, or in simple terms , it is an electrical switch that shuts of the fuel when you switch of the ignition of the car.

the solenoid is a little electromagnet that, when energised, hauls a little metal bar out of the way of a little valve, thus opening the valve. When the valve is open fuel can flow. When you cut the current to the solenoid, the valve shuts and the fuel stops flowing. Solenoid and valve will all be in one little packet (aka "solenoid valve")
