Work out where the joists are and then cut the holes in a design that enables you to run the wires between them.
If you want to go across the joists you will have to cut extra holes and drill through the joists and then fill the holes when you have threaded the wires through.
IF YOU HAVE AN OLD PLASTER AND LATH CEILING THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU START BECAUSE ITS A FILTHY JOB IN AN OLD HOUSE.
Also, hate to be a bore, but I think you are now supposed to employ qualified electricians for this kind of work. A new rule from the nanny State!

Use a correctly sized holesaw and connect the lights up with a generous amount of cable.
When you come to the mains to the first light ,again make sure there is plenty of cable connected and try to guide it to an area upstairs where there are not ceramic tiles fitted so that you can get the floorboards up and make your connection.

surly you have a light in your kitchen, fit the fitting near to your standard lighting don't forget to switch off the supply first, take away the old fitting making a note off the wiring colour's etc firstly then remove once done start to fit the new fitting and copy the wiring as you wrote down, switch back on the supply when you've completed the task

You must use a qualified electrician for this in your home now, or at least to make the connections and certify the installation, get one out (look in the yellow pages)and ask him or her how to do it, they will have done it thousands of times, you can drill the holes and fish the cables into place and then allow the qualified electrician to make the final connections.

Good Luck !

From the existing light you have to cut small holes in the ceiling so you can feed cables above the ceiling from hole to hole until you reach the locations of the lights.
Afterwards you have to make good the ceiling.

you can buy a tool that actually cuts the holes in the ceiling the correct diameter for the down lighters/spot lights. my boyfriends got one, but as i'm a stupid girl i'm not sure what this tool is called (as my boyf switches off when i talk about shopping i switch off when he talks power tools! lol)

I do happen to know that B&Q (uk) sell them. the brand/make we've got is Macalister (i think that's correct spelling)

good luck =)

A brace that expands between the rafters should be easy to find in any big box lumber store. Lowe's for example
