Does anyone know WHY we have to use powder formula within an hour after we make it? We waste so much formula because she acts like shes hungry but then when i make it she doesn't want it... Just wondering why we have to use it within the hour we make it! Thanks

It's because the bacteria that gets into the bottle. Compared to breast--it has tons of bacteria in it already then to add another hour or so it's getting a lot in there. Personally, I only let it sit for an hour maybe until my son was four months. Then I started to refrigerate it and give it to him when ever he got hungry. It worked out just fine. I think it's a rule that isn't necessary to follow but a good idea. My son is eight months now happy, healthy, and normal.

Well, milk will spoil. But, if you at least keep it in the refrigerator, it will stay good. The longest I would keep my milk was a hour.

What I learned to do was just start out making 4oz of milk, then, if my twins were still hungry, I would make then 2-4 more ounces.

That way, you can cut down on the waste. I felt the same way you do now because we had our twins on Neosure formula by Similac and that was $14.99 per canister...OUCH!!

Our twins were born preemies and they had to be on a 22 cal diet until they were 9 months old...talk about an expensive meal...

Hope this has helped you.. :-)

The formual might go bad from the bacteria from the baby. Why not put a little formula in the bottle and then save the rest of the formula in the refrigerator. That way if she is still hungry you can give her more formula and you are not wasteing the rest. I think that you can leave the formula in the fridge for 24 hours if your child hasn't used it.

what u can do is prepare less quantity so that if child doesn't finish it u can throw it away. Also u can prepare the amount u want and refrigerate it, just reheat when she is hungry. Unused formulas can be stored in refrigerator upto 24 hrs but used formulas need to be thrown away immediately. Also be sure not to keep unused formula unrefrigerated for more than 2 hrs. Formulas go bad quickly if not refrigerated. And yes they are EXPENSIVE!!!!

Bacteria and saliva from your daughter's mouth gets into the bottle (backwash happens with babies, too), and they start breaking down the milk. Try it yourself- get a glass of milk, drink some, and then leave it sitting on the counter for 45 minutes. Go back and take a big swig- does it taste as good as when you poured it? No.

When my son was younger, I'd mix up a quart in a mason jar and store it in the fridge. When he was hungry, I could pour out just what I thought he needed- one ounce as a trial if he might or might not be hungry, more for a regular feeding. It made for a lot more flexibility and less waste.

start small and if they are still hungry make two more ounces. or you can make a big picture like what they eat in a average day and put in bottle and warm it. Because you can make it and put it in the fridge and use it for 24 hours just as long as the baby does not drink from the bottle then you have to wait an hour

Bacteria or back wash from the babies mouth. Believe me I know it is expensive. My son is turning 1 this week and I am saying goodbye to the formula and hello whole milk.

But it's better to waste a little than to have them sick. You may need to check with your doctor if she is not wanting to eat. May need to change formula. Or it could be that she is just not hungry depending on how often she is being feed and how old she is.

Only follow that rule if your child has put her mouth to the bottle. If she has, the saliva can get into the formula causing it to break down and lose its nutritional value after an hours time. If you feel you are wasting your money on this, may i suggest to you buying the ready made formula?

Because like milk, it can spoil without refrigeration. I used to make a bottle, and whatever wasn't used went straight into the fridge. I reheated only once, after that any leftover went down the drain. I agree to only make small bottles, it's a lot less waste to make another if you need it instead of having too much and having to throw it away.

formula spoils very quickly, is doesn't have all the preservative in it to make it keep for a long time. You may have a picky eater, and could try using a different formula. My youngest would only eat the Carnation formula, all the others she would spit right out...
