For my money, it's Dave Cockrum, hands down.

The last weekend of July 1975, Louisville Kentucky, Rivercon I, I spent THREE DAYS sitting next to him while he talked about the book and his & Chris Claremont's plans for it.

At age 51, this is probably still my favorite moment as a comic book fan.

I bought three original pages from Giant-Size #1, and also the splash page from #95 (originally plotted to be the second half of Giant-Size #2.) I still own the splash; I had the mixed pleasure of telling Dave that Marvel had changed the letter 'T' in the title: "WARHUNT". A couple of months later, he still hadn't seen a printed copy of that issue. (In the original, the horizontal cross-bar is entirely to the left of the vertical staff. Both have curley-cues & the vertical is rather like the letter 'J'.) (This page cannot even be pried loose from my cold, dead hands.)

You've got to thank Jack Kirby for the initial look on the book. And Werner Roth & George Tuska for maintaining it's run through uninspiring times. Neal Adams & Jim Steranko did some remarkable work near the end of it's first run.. And John Byrne also did excellent comics here.

But I was already a big fan of Dave's work on The Legion of Super-Heroes. And enough of a fan of the potential of the earlier X-Men to really dig Cockrum's work. I still do.

Which Xmen? Marvel has several Xmen titles and each has a different artist. Some notable artists would be Jim Lee, John Byrne, Chris Claremont, and Dave Cockrum

For which team, and what time period?

The X-Men have had dozens of artists for the past 50 years.

It depends on which line of the X-men comics you are talking about, as there are many different story lines involving different characters right now.
The Uncanny X-men series is being drawn by Billy Tan.
The plain X-men series is being drawn by Chris Bachalo
The Astonishing X-men series is being drawn by John Cassaday
The Ultimate X-men series is being drawn by Tom Raney
And finally, the New X-men series is being drawn by Paco Medina

It was Stan Lee and another guy (I forget his name, but look in the Detroit Free Press. It should be there on the Sunday Comics).
