I watched a movie in either late 80s or early 90s. It's about a group of guys living in a big city. One of the guys has a real talent for graffiti. His biggest dream is to find a solid white, clean train car to paint. Well, he has a serious girlfriend who gets pregnant. His life starts looking up, he quits doing bad stuff. Until, one night, he spots the elusive white train car. He can't resist. He sneaks up to the train real late at night, and goes to work on it. A policeman spots him, shoots first, and asks questions later. He ends up dead over spray painting a train car. I can't find anyone who this sounds familiar to. If anyone can tell me the title of this movie, you will give me an answer I have been looking for for years!! Thanks ahead of time.

There was a movie about a graffiti artist in NYC I believe the name of the film and his last name was Basquiat (or something close to it). Never saw the movie, however, so can't tell if this is the one.

Well, your synopsis sounds strikingly similar to "Beat Street" (1984, Stan Lathan), except that the grafitti artist isn't shot by the police. He dies on the tracks while fighting a rival artist.
