The world's #1 players are Roger Federer and Amelie Mauresmo.
The current world champion on the men's side is David Nalbandian of Argentina, who defeated Roger Federer is last year's Master Series Cup final. The world champion on the
women's side is Mauresmo. These are the world champions as recognized their respective pro tours. The ITF, which governs the four Slams, Davis Cup and Fed Cup, has their own criteria
for naming world champions. Their criteria is the performance at
the four Slams. The reigning ITF world champions are Roger
Federer and Kim Clijsters. The season-ending tour events crown
the world champions for both tours. The world #1 rankings are
completely separate from the world championships.

There is no actual Tennis World Championship, only the Grand Slam and World Ranking events which determine World Ranking and the status of the world's best players
To be honest, the main Grand Slam (regarded by the World's Tennis Stars as the main one that everyone wants to win because it is so famous) is Wimbledon. Win that, and everyone remembers you as 'World No#1' for that moment in time
As for as World Rankings go, Roger Federer is the Men's best Tennis player
