For the last two weeks my right knee has been feeling unstable. At times it actually feels "loose" and feels like it is buckling under me. Its also making a strange sound when extended. I have a doctor appt. later this week but was wondering what this could be???

IDK (Internal Derangement of Knee) is what you suffer from. There is a cartilage inside your knee (Meniscus), which gets torn usually in sports (especially football, basketball, etc where sudden turning on a bent knee sometimes happens). The piece of cartilage thus torn away starts giving the clicking sensation and can lock your knee if it gets interposed between the thigh (femur) bone and the leg bone (tibia). Treatment is simple these days and can be performed using laparoscopic surgery, where the loose cartilage is picked up and removed from the joint and the Meniscus is repaired. At the time of surgery the Cruciate ligaments would also be explored (which are essential for the joint stability) and any defect would be rectified simultaneously in the same sitting.

Sounds like you could have sprained or pulled a ligament in your knee.

The ligaments (like the ACL or MCL) make your knee "sturdy" to prevent the joint from moving in different directions. If your knee feels like it's moving in ways it shouldn't, then chances are it has something to do with the ligaments. If you aren't in SEVERE pain though, you probably just strained it. It's not a huge deal. Just a brace and some physical therapy for a few weeks.

Good luck!
