Gross amount = 109% of net amount
therfore Vat = 9% of net amount
net = gross*100/109
therfore vat = 9/100 * gross*100/109
= (9*gross)/ 109

If gross VAT amount is 9 then VAT Element=100
If gross VAT amount is 1 then VAT Element=100/9
If gross VAT amount is x then VAT Element=(100*x)/9

Put simply -- divide the gross figure by 109
then multiply by 100 = amount less VAT

9/109 = 0.0825 or 8.25%

8.25% of the gross amount is VAT
