where does gothic architecture originate. why is it called gothic?

It was originally an insult. Renascence architects who were infatuated with a neo-classicism, condemn the great and beautiful cathedrals that used flying buttresses to increase wall height and strength, as "Gothic". This implied that they were of the "barbarian" cultures, such as the visi goths and the ostro goths (east and west goths respectively) who caused the collapse of classical civilization.
