Why is there a universal fascination with celebrities?

Why are we obsessed with strangers we know only through media knowledge and not everyday heros?

It is because the media is always featuring them as though they were worthy of being admired. Plus they are selected and groomed to always look great whereas the rest of us humans have our bad days as well as good days.

The simple reason is because to many people in our society are losing their values. Instead of looking up to our parents, doctors, soldiers, or any figure in our lives that matter, we tend to look at the "cool" people. Many people today are more concerned about being "cool" than being a good person and doing the right thing.

The spotlight is on celebrities. The media hypes them up. They are beautiful, fit people who try to portray perfection. Our lives seemingly suck, while their are SEEMINGLY perfect. Then we are amazed by the fact that they have a bm like everyone else or wind up in rehab. In the words of Kermit the Frog, Its not easy bein' green.

Celebrities are the icons of the powerful, rich, and famous.We all want to be a part of these people lives,if for no other reason just to find out how they did it.

I somewhat accept as true with you, Wayne. As somebody else has already pronounced in here, all of us have somewhat of a morbid curiousity. And all of us decide to hearken to a sprint "airborne dirt and dust" now and then. in case you opt to appreciate which personalities are gay or bi, this is undemanding to be sure. bypass to the Wikipedia (on line encyclopedia) and enter something like gay sought after PERSONALITIES. it supply you an entire checklist and you will in all probability be stunned. yet as for me, it makes no distinction what an actor/actress' sexual orientation is. What does count number is despite if or no longer they seem to be a competent actor/actress.

Probably because the star of their favorite movie or tv show is a celebrity and that they are known all over the world and have tons of money.

why not? I don't understand why either. Although if you look at professional athletes, it is no wonder why we look up to them, we pay them millions of dollars to entertain us by doing things we can't do as well as them, therefore, we admire them. Like the New York Yankees (boo!) the reason they have the highest payroll is because they win a lot of games, people consider them to be "champions" and little kids all around the world look up to them (as well as other athletes, mind you...Micheal Jordan, tiger woods, Wayne Gretzky...the list goes on.) as their "heroes". And the fact that people are willing to pay upwards to hundreds of dollars for tickets. As far as celebs. people make them famous by giving them the attention...press. paparazzi...people just can't leave them alone. people like T.O. (the football player) is the type that cant keep his mouth shut so people are all over him. just like paris hilton is so dumb - people are all over it. people are so obsesed with what they do, rather than who they are because they get paid big bucks to do it and we are all jealous of that and wish that we could have that too..in a sense, we look up to it and they inspire us in out "persuit to happiness"..although, money certainly may not be able to "buy happiness" there are a lot of other people that seem to think so. so I guess that its just that society has lost the true meaning of a hero, calling their "uber-rich" idols heros. ...i don't get it either.

I have no idea why.
I wish people would focus on their own lives instead of what Ashlee Simpson or Whitney Huston is doing today.
I try not to even care about celebrities because, unless they are doing something that is concerning me, they are of no importance to me.
