I've tried both manual and electric....electric are the best. Just plug it into an outlet or charge the battery and let it do the work. Your friend will get to a point where she will be able to squeeze her milk directly into a bottle but for the beginning stages it's hard to hold the breast in place and pump manually.
Hope I've been of some help.

For my last baby I had a Medela Harmony pump.. I LOVED that pump! I actually chose it over my electric pump. Ive used a Medela Pump In Style and a Medela Double Ease. When you do alot of pump electric is good but just for every now an then I chose my hand pump.

There are manual pump kits by Avent that are great. They come with containers to hold the pumped milk and an insulated bag. Easy to take apart and clean. Easy to travel with. I just took mine on a trip and it didn't trip off any alarms in airport security.

the Medela brand is the best. I use to sell different brands and I would recommend it.
