Actually, it's mostly down to the subconscious brain. In a sense, breathing and sometimes movement are completely automatic. Thus, you can consider breathing to be a subconscious mental activity. That's how you "leave" and "breathe" without me, or any other external agent. (Unless of course, that agent is chocolate, which, recent findings suggest, is crucial to the correct functioning of most mental activity.) Hope that helps.
