There are many polyesters. Generally people are referring to the polyester used a lot in clothing. It is a polymer obtained by reaction of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, often designated PET - polyethelene terephthalate.

It is a long polymer. It is used in fiberglass reinforced products like boat hull, shower stalls, and seats at fast food joints. It is cross linked usually with Styrene to become more or less solid.
