The I.C.C. Champions Trophy was first inaugurated in 1998 in the name of I.C.C. Knock-out Tournament. The Tournament in 2000 also was played as I.C.C. Knock-out tournament.
The name of the Tournament as I.C.C. Champions Trophy was changed in 2002.
The first tournament was played in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In the final, South Africa defeated West Indies by 4 wickets and won the tournament. (Brief Score : West Indies 245 runs in 49.3 overs) South Africa 248 runs for 6 wickets in 47 overs.
The first tournament in the name of Champions Trophy was played in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The final match between Sri Lanka and India was abandoned out due to rain and as such
Sri Lnka and India were declared as Joint Winners.
