It's emotional overeating. You should keep track of when you eat and what your feelings are for about a week. Most likely you'll see patterns that you are most likely to eat when you are bored, tired, angry, etc..
There is a free group that meets in most communities called Overeaters Anonymous. Usually they list their meeting times inn local papers or you can call your hospital to see if they can get you in touch with someone. They probably also have a website or in the phone book.

In our crazy, stressful society we all have holes in our souls and want to feel like we are okay. Feeding ourselves gives us that good feeling temporarily. Overeating has become an addiction for many of us and it is a serious health problem. Exercise can help get rid of some fat, but I don't know of any cure for overeating except for whatever it takes, like counseling maybe, to get in touch with what makes us turn to food. Some use it as a barrier to intimacy, some use it as a substitute for love, some use it to keep down feelings of hate, fear, rage, whatever. It is a problem that needs some serious consideration.

The best way to find out is to keep a food log and put the time , amount, what you ate and why you ate it for a week...then Gage what is the reasons and that way you can set up goals from there.
I carried an old fashioned spiral notebook and kept note in it.
My biggest problem was eating too much too late, because to busy and didn't' want to stop and eat. go figure- that makes you fat.

There is no one answer! It could be compulsive overeating, or just a change in your life that you are "treating" by using food to quell the pain. Get some fitness articles and follow the simple rules for change in lifestyle and diet (which you probably already know). I know, for me, I stopped exercising as much after I moved, and my friends (who went biking and skiing w/me) weren't there. It could be something as simple as needing a friend or solving a stressful situation. Short term therapy would be good, if this doesn't get better, to find out WHY you're doing this.

MAny people over eat for comfort or because of emotional problems
I was an over eater and to stop I bought water and everytime I got a craving for a snack I drank water.
I have to tell ya I went to the bathroom so much one day I cried.
After about 3 months things got better and I learned to control my snacking

There are several different answers to this question. One is – your body craves food because of the food you are eating. Foods with sugar and starch (starch turns to sugar in your body) are the problem. If you have high levels of sugar in your system it creates cravings. Try staying away from sugar and starch for 5-7 days, you should lose weight and the cravings will not be there. Foods with starch include potatoes, pasta and bread. As you detoxify from this sugar you will lose energy for a few days, but eventually you will fill more energetic then ever.
I have experienced this myself.

trying to fill an empty hole inside. but there also could be a medical issue involved. i did take care of my emotional issues and the weight wouldn't come off. or i always felt hungry. so i had my thyroid checked. i was so exhausted all the time. my thyroid is now being treated. my blood test looked normal but my symptoms were so entirely pointing to low thyroid that the Dr started me on thyroid meds anyway. it is like i am alive again. also the medication topomax has helped me drop 50 pounds. it just takes my appetite away, to a reasonable level. i do eat.
