The age of the house and living next to a main road will certainly contribute to the dust problem - mainly because old houses weren't built to allow free air movement through them.....
however burning a candle say during the evening does help to remove some of the dust in the atmosphere - and wiping all wipeable surfaces with a damp cloth squeezed in a weak solution of white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda (just a little of each) and water will help keep the dust from settling and staying.
I have noticed the difference in my house cleaning activities since I moved to a newer property than my old one - regular wiping (instead of dusting) has not only kept the problem to a minimum - it also makes everything clean and shine in a way furniture polishes don't!!!!

The answer about duct cleaning is a good one.
If your house is 70 years old, then your walls are no doubt plaster. These can flake behind the walls causing lots of dust. Your furnace ductwork may be picking some of this up. Return air ducts are usually open to picking up whatever is floating around.
Are you keeping your furnace filter clean?
Do you keep the windows open a lot? If you do, then maybe the road is to blame.
Basically, there are a lot of possible reasons. You need to try and check them one by one.

Mine is the same, but 200 years old, on a busy road. I got a kid, cats and dogs too which doesn't help matters. I have less dust in the winter when the coal fire is burning - sucks it all up the chimney. Don't dust, wipe with a damp cloth, and replace dust hugging carpet with real flooring or tiling.

when you dust it gets stirred up more, and when you swep you stir it up, and when you vacuum you stir it up, and when some one enters/exit it adds up! Attic fans pull it in,ceiling fans spread dust and mold.Window fans and AC units both add and stir it around! If you just have a AC unit for heat and cool... the dry air increases static which brings out the hidden dust that walked in with you! Buy and move from room to room a Humidifier! Use damp dusting clothes ,too!

Dust I believe is dead skin, so therefore it depends on how many folks live in your house, i live in the country and its a never ending battle to keep on top of it. Our house is 200 years old and we have the same problem, just make sure your dysons up to it, dont get a phobia though watch a life of grime on discovery and you will feel like an angel

Because you cause dust by cleaning more. Dust is dead skin that falls off so the more active you are, the more dust you have!
