Metal-air batteries were used to power the filaments of old fashioned vacuum tube radio receivers before mains electricity reached many homes. They were also called "air cells". They were not very popular. Filament batteries were usually called "A" batteries.

I have seen an explanation of how they worked but I cannot find it. Perhaps you should use an internet search engine on "air cells" or "A batteries" or "metal-air cells".

you need to define what a metal air battery is, and the reactions that power it. then you'll have your answer
