I developed pre-eclampsia when I was having my twins. I had an emergency c-section at 32 weeks. So while it wasn't a "natural" premature labour pre-eclampsia is just one of the conditions that calls for the need of immediate treatment regardless of how many weeks pregnant you are. I developed the condition at 29 weeks but they managed to stabilise the condition to get me to 32 weeks. I had to stay in the hospital for close monitoring. The twins are doing great now. I would avoid an amniocentesis test because of the risk. Ask your self this... if the results of the test came back as a high chance of the baby having downs syndrome would you terminate that baby? If the answer is no then you know you don't need the test. Good luck with your pregnancy, my best advice is relax, put your feet up and enjoy it!

Yes, it happened to me. I was 40 and expecting my third child and I had amniocentesis at 20 weeks. I had cramping immediately afterwards and rested as much as I could for the next few days, but the cramping continued and after three days I realized that I was in labour and went to the ER and delivered a baby boy who sadly did not survive birth.
At 42 I had a healthy daughter, who is now 9 years old, but I did not have amnio with her, I would not take the risk of that happening again.

My granddaughter was 3months premature and is 11yrs old this December, first grandchild a boy was as early and died at 4weeks old, following 2 grandchildren were born normal pregnancies, now have another on the way, my daughter is happy about being pregnant again and my wife and I are apprehensive about her being pregnant as my daughter was told that if she were to have any more it could kill her, she is being monitored very carefully and so far everything is going good. So Good luck with you're new pregnancy

I've heard that amnio can cause "abortion" or miscarriage. I've never heard of preterm labor but I imagine it's possible.
Prevention of Preterm Labor
While not all cases of preterm labor can be prevented there are a lot of women who will have contractions that can be prevented by simple measures.
One of the first things that your practitioner will tell you to do if you are having contractions is staying very well hydrated.
We definitely see the preterm labor rates go up in the summer months. What happens with dehydration is that the blood volume decreases, therefore increasing the concentration of oxytocin (hormone that causes uterine contractions) to rise. Hydrating yourself will increase the blood volume.
Others things that you can do would be to pay attention to signs and symptoms of infections (bladder, yeast, etc.) because they can also cause infections. Keeping all of your appointments with your practitioner and calling whenever you have questions or symptoms. A lot of women are afraid of "crying wolf," but it is much better to be incorrect than to be in preterm labor and not being treated.
I hope this information helps you a little bit. Sorry if it doesn't Good luck with your current pregnancy!

I'm 20wks pregnant with my 2nd baby and I have just received a letter from my hospital with an appointment to have a scan to assess your risk of pre-term and high blood pressure problems. the letter states "" this test is now offered to all women between 21 and 25 weeks of pregnancy"". Maybe it would be worth your while to contact your scanning department at your local hospital and see if you would be offered this test early in view of your previous situation. Hope this helps. Good Luckxx
