why was sita banished at the beggining of the ramayana?

As I recall, Sita wasn't banished. She was abducted by Ravana the demon. At the end of the story, Rama rescues her from his clutches, but instead of taking her back right away, he must test her fidelity by making Sita walk through a fire. If she burns, she was unfaithful. If she doesn't, she's in the clear. Of course, Sita escapes the fire test unscathed and she and Rama live happily ever after. with Hanuman at their side.
