I need some ideas on toys for my son who is 4 1/2 months old. I stay at home with him and he gets lots of attention. But there are moments I need to do something. Like right now I've been trying to get ready to go to the store and he's just whining. He's in his exersaucer with a baby video in. Nothing keeps his attention for any length of time, even a few minutes. I know part of it is his age. Is there anything that has worked for anyone or am I just going to have to deal until he learns to play better with age (and when does that happen)?

Get the Baby Einstein Baby Mozart, Beethoven, etc. DVD or videos. My daughter is now 8 months, and she STILL will sit there for at least an hour and watch the pictures and listen to the music. It's AMAZING how much she loves it.

Also, LAMAZE toys are terrific, especially for children your sons age that are starting to play with toys more with their hands. They are very colorful, and normally make some sort of noise. You can get them at places like Babies R Us, Kohls, Toys R Us, etc.

Also, I got a vibrating rocker chair from Fischer Price that has a detachable toy arch. It has a cow/farm theme. She has loved that chair pretty much since birth. She naps in it, plays in it, and it's wonderful!!!

Finally, anything with a mirror in it. Look for activing chairs or gyms that have mirrored things on them. My baby now likes to have conversations with herself! lol!

Good luck!

At 4 1/2 months, my daughter loved her bouncer with the fish aquarium. She would rock back and forth to make the fish swing and the bubbles in the aquarium and music turn on. She also had a Baby Einstein play mat and I would put her on her back and there was a mirror hanging down and she would stare at herself for ever. I also had a swing that she usually fell asleep in, but I would put her in that a lot and she was fine. My daughter is now 21 months old and of course she can play on her own and I work from home but she still wants mommy to play with her. Keeping our kids happy even when we aren't is just part of the job. Good luck!

Do you have a play pen? Make sure you put some teething toys in there and music cubes and things in there for him. (Also put the boppy pillow in there to help him sit up) and never take the toys out of the playpen. The only time he gets those toys is in the play pen. This worked for me. Good luck.

Have you thought about a front pack or sling? They were a lifesaver for me when my son was younger- he could stay close to me and interact with me and I could get stuff done, too. Washing dishes is a little tricky, but lots of other things can be accomplished with a baby attached, and then you both win.
When that wasn't an option, my son liked laying under his activity gym and batting at toys.

It's not forever- try to enjoy it :o)

i observed that as quickly as my nephew become born and then much greater so as quickly as I had my daughter, the dogs that we had on the time knew what toys have been the toddlers toys and what become her own. as quickly as we've been given yet another dogs we had to easily keep telling her NO and say it very sternly and take the toy from her, it has worked with all of our canines so some distance, different than the two Boston Terrier domestic dogs we've got, they are into each little thing however the older rottweiler will take the toys away and positioned across them to me now.

My son loves his activity mat with animals hanging from above. It also has a mirror which he can stare at and music that plays.
Another thing that my baby loves is his bouncy chair that has toys arched over him. It's by Fisher-Price and when he kicks his feet, it plays music. We take the toy bar off and he kicks his feet while he watches Baby Einstein videos, which he dearly loves.

At this age he might get interested in one of those toys that is also a mirror. We had a turtle that had a mirror on the belly. The shell was like a pillow...so that propped it up. the legs were teether toys. She loved it around that age.

my son loved his bouncer (leapfrog), his fisher price aquarium swing, and fisher price aquarium gymanie. he loved it when i put him down on a blanket with toys that made noise when he touched them. mostly i had him in his swing or on the ground when i tried to do something. if he's already moving a lot - use the playpen or some gates to keep him out of trouble spots. remember that every time before you put him on the ground to lay down on your tummy and take a look from his vantage point - see what he sees and get rid of anything dangerous.
