why does the left oppose the judeo-christian 10 commandments, but support the koran? muslims also *claim* to adhere to the 10 commandments. someone told me that the golden rule is "God's new law", but it cant work alone. if want to be treated in a way that kills me, is it ok for me to kill someone else? therefore why are the 10 commandments, which is good for society -even if not said out of a religious agenda, facing so much opposition from the left?

I am a liberal and a Christian. I read the Bible and follow the Golden Rule and the 10 commandments in my personal life. Jesus stated to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. To me that means keep Religion in Church and at home, it does not belong in the government or Civic affairs. The 1st amendment to the Constitution prohibits the establishment of a state Religion. That is the only reference to God or Religion in the entire Constitution. The Ten Commandments are listed differently in the Translation of the Bible which the Catholics use than the version the Protestants use. Choosing one version over the other in public buildings would be establishing a state supported Religion. Would you want the Catholic version posted in the courtrooms? I've heard people say that Catholics are idolaters using the Protestant version of the 10 Commandments. I certainly would not want that justification for persecution of Catholics, Buddhists, or any other Religion posted in a courtroom as if it were the law of the land.
By the way the person who told me that the Golden Rule is "God's New Law" was Matthew in his Gospel. It's in the Bible. You should read it sometime.

Just because people oppose the ten commandments' use in government doesn't mean they oppose them altogether. I know plenty of liberal Christians who believe in the ten commandments, but don't want them to be posted in classrooms, courthouses, and the like. And not all of them say they oppose the ten commandments but support the Koran.
You're also wrong to say that muslims "claim" to adhere to the ten commandments. I've never heard that claim in my life. The ten commandments are a Judeo-Christian concept, not an Islamic one.
As far as the "Golden Rule", I've never been a huge fan of that as it's a huge part of why we have hypocrites in this world. Everyone wants to be treated right, but they're not always willing to treat others right, hence, hypocrisy.
Also, the ten commandments can NOT be said out of a religious agenda as they are indeed a religious document. They are also not necessarily "good" for society. Not unless that society is a theocracy and even that's debatable.
In response to your comment to the user Phoenix, you need to learn something about the commandments that you seem so desperate to promote. Granted, telling someone not to kill, is not promoting religion. It's just plain common sense and common sense is something that crosses all religions, not just Christianity. However, there ARE commandments that DO promote religion and that is where the opposition comes from.
Christians aren't going to post only those Commandments which don't promote God. But the government cannnot and will not post the whole thing as it is a religious document and promotes religion. Period. You promote one commandment, you promote them all, and if you promote them all, you're promoting religion, end of story.

1. How can you assume all people associating with the "left" even care about the 10 commandments?
2. I think I understand what you are drawing from, but you are a bit confused. No one has a problem with the content of the commandments, but with the dissemination of these religious tenets - i.e. on courthouse walls, gov. buildings, etc. The gov. simply cannot promote any religion (see 1st amendment) and posting their "commandments" on the wall of a gov. building is doing just that. THAT is the problem, not what the commandments say.

The ten commandments have been around as long as man has had the ability to think for himself, as has the golden rule. No one religion can claim that they were the first to use these self evident truths. We are all born with the knowledge of right and wrong. I have absolutely no religious affiliations, and yet I still follow these truths that you refer to as commandments, or rules. Is it possible that the so called left is really opposed to the churchs trying to claim something that really isn't theirs?

The left is generally tolerant of others, as Jesus preached. The right are the ones who covet their neighbours countries, murder Iraqis, and steal their resources to make Halliburton shareholders rich. The right clearly disregard the ten commandments and then claim they are righteous Christians.

Catholics do no longer worship idols. There aren't any teachings of the church that tells us catholics to achieve this. the images are for veneration and remembrance of the greatness, heroism and martyrdom of the saints, prophets and also of our Lord Jesus Christ. with regard to the first and 2d commandments, isn't it logical to contain the words with regards to graven images with the first one? isn't worshipping the graven idols also a similar with having unusual gods? it is why this is in basic terms logical to contain it in the first commandment because it summarizes them.

You are mistaken. I am a good liberal, and I am a Christian who believes in the teachings of the bible, including the ten commandments. I also believe in loving thy neighbor. You know, Jesus was a liberal. Look it up. It's in the good book.
