It is due to pollution from factories and cars. Bigger cities with more population would in turn have more cars, motorbikes and buses. Some cities also have large factories producing smoke and pollution into the air, covering the vacinity of the city.

As has already been advised - air pollution from various sources will undoubtedly decrease the quality of the air, worsened by the closeness of buildings restricting air flow, also worsened if the area investigated is situated in a bowl or dip in the landscape - but also, by the same token - some of the pollution can be counteracted by the trees and vegetation of parks and other green landscapes ..... so, dependant on how much 'greenery' there is directly or very close to a given area will also dictate, to some extent, the amount of pollution in the direct atmosphere of cities. Another factor to consider is the type of pollution being emitted and how much of it, in a given area - the density of the carbons and other pollutants, such as factory emissions although may be high, may not be as much as cars and other traffics as factory emissions escape into the upper atmosphere, and traffic escapes at 'ground level' so to speak.

Volume of traffic has a great deal to do with air quality in our cities. London is quite heavily polluted due to heavy traffic flow. Some parts of the city are worse than others. The parks seem less polluted and also the outter suburbs. In truth, the whole of UK is quite densely polluted. Fresh air is best taken at the seaside or on high ground, Wales and Scotland.
