Many people are so empty and shallow that they need someone to idolize, Do you know who's Ricky Martin or the group where he used to sing, Menudo? I do remember when back then they had a concert and many of the girls there got unconscious, very ridiculous. Many have forgotten that real values doesn't come from these "artists, actress or singers", values are getting with the way that we behave inside the society. Many don't see their parents, teachers, doctors, etc. as a roll to follow, Why? Because the most just want the easier way and the easier way is through the mind of this kind of people, who are mentally poor, with no self identification, no self respect and are sentimentally immature. How is it possible that after all the attrosities Michael Jackson had done with kids, many people still following him? How many women breath deep for Russel Crowe when he's an alcoholic and a women abuser? How is it that many rappers are drugs abuser and even knowing so many people want to be like them? That's another reason because any stupid come talking about God, not really feeling it, just looking for money and power, and many people come to follow him. Remember what had happend in Wacko, Texas, or in Guyana? And this is the same that happens in Politic and in many aspects of life. The bad thing is that when few of this people open their eyes and ask "What I'm doing?" Is kind of too late, you won't ever get the wasted time back. You may like some artists for one or two songs, or for the song's letter, but you can't idolize a human being. If you gonna respect an artist do it for his/her talent not for the body, the eyes, the butt, etc. People, if you feel empty turn your heart to God, in whatever God you believe, in your parents or someone close who's a good roll. Fill up your insides with knowledge and love and you'll see that all that you need to keep on will come from inside you, not from no one else.

It is my contention that folks who have little or no talent are successful because they make up for that lack of talent in bed. It's not WHAT you know but WHO you know. Unfortunately, I have been told that I am very talented and I would love nothing more than to be on the road performing my own music that I've written. Trouble is, I don't have any connections and if I did I wouldn't compromise my principles (sleep my way to the top).
Those who idolize people like you've mentioned are just as naive and talentless as those they worship! You could say it's a case of the blind leading the blank!!! LOL
Have a great day!!!

I think it is because of the underlying ideals in the American dream. Think about it. There is so much crap on TV like Cribs, Pimp My Ride, The Simple Life, etc. that is kinda subconciously beats you up for not being wealthy. So we idolize celebrities to live vicariously through them. Why do you think VH1switched from being an oldies station to a second E!? Besides, I think there are way more women celebrities than male because it's easier to market them to men and women. What guy doesn't want to have Denise Richards, Carmen Electra, etc.?

It is not just Americans that are nutty for talent-challenged pop-stars :-), this is worldwide! Some folks, for whatever reason, have a belief system that they cannot sing, or cannot get on a stage, or cannot be 'famous', so they let someone else rise and shine for them. Even if the 'star' is of mediocre talent, it does not matter, as the non-performer is projecting his or her desires onto the 'celebrity'....if the celeb is successful, then so is the listener in their world of projection and fantasy, they see themselves on stage!

Most of those people wouldn't even get a second glance if they weren't all done over with teams of make-up artists and plastic surgeons. Americans are just getting scammed and are way too impressionable. I totally agree with the list of no-talents that you included in your question. But you left out the biggest waste of oxygen, Paris Hilton.

I AGREE!! America has few shepards and tons and tons of sheep who bleet at the drop of a hat. I don't follow trends and do my own thing. It amazes me how stupid some of the fashions are yet people wear them. Jessica Simpson could get ***** tattooed on her forehead and women woould follow because JS did it.. Get a life and get a mind of your own. Don't forget about a backbone. I agree many of them lack talent and smarts too.

I think people, and "kids" especially want to emulate "celebrities" because they don't have mentors or role models in their own personal lives to emulate. We all need "heroes" in our lives to look up to and inspire us. Most of the world gives so much attention to celebs that it's hard to look away. In my life, I have a Godly missionary woman who inspires me. Then I look to women like, Ruth Graham, Condoleeza Rice, Sheila Walsh and many others. We just need to look beyond the blitz!! Take care.

Your question evoked many many thoughts. The first non-singing females I thought about were Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. I ain't hatin'. They can dance, but their voices are sounds for sore ears.

perhaps i must grudgingly agree that it is kind of stupid to idolize people who have barely enough talent to even dress well...
however, it is not just americans. the idolization of celebrities is a global thing in every country that has them.
