Dodge intrepids are known to have engine problems...if you have a 2.7 liter engine, you will notice that your engine light will constantly come on and once in a while your oil light will flicker.
98-04 intrepids are best if the engine is a 3.5 liter. if not you will find oil residue inside your engine very often, as well as misfiring spark plugs... to figure out why the engine light is on, you can take it to the nearest autozone and ask for a code reader, its free to borrow it as long as you use it right in front of the store, then they can help you turn the engine light off without having to pay at the dealership.

No most likely not the light can come on due a couple hundred different reasons. The only reason the has to come on "per the US Government" is because your car is polluting the air. If you just filled the gas tank I would check that your gas cap is tight before making your appointment. This could be charged too you and not covered under warranty do to owner error. Hope this helps.

If you are noticing any performance, starting or idle issues, the light may indicate a problem that needs to be resolved soon. The reason for this is you could be loading up the catalytic converter with excessive emissions. Since Catalytic converters are very expensive, you should resolve this problem ASAP. But if you have noticed no problems with the car, it most likely a problem with the O2 sensor. This part is not expensive, but should be addressed in the near future to ensure proper emission controls.

Take your car to Advance Auto Parts or Auto Zone. They'll put a code reader on it (for free) and let you know what the problem is.

Whenever I get a light, I take my car to AutoZone and they check it for free. I imagine other parts houses also offer this free service.
But if you are still under warranty, take it back to the dealer.

They did not hook up a scanner to the computer. This costs extra so they wont do it unless you pay.
