how would the veil wearing muslims feel if they were met by ku klux clan wearing people, ie the bus driver?- wouln't they be intimidated, isn't it anti-social? This is my arguement and i totally agree with jack straw. Also why are they in this country when they do not try to integrate, and segregate themselves from english culture- which to them is unholy, and against their belief's. Do you agree? what are your thoughts

how would the veil wearing muslims feel if they were met by someone wearing something that resembles the ku klux clan outfit, ie the bus driver?- wouldn't they be intimidated, isn't it anti-social? This is my arguement and i totally agree with jack straw. Also why are they in this country when they do not try to integrate, and segregate themselves from english culture- which to them is unholy, and against their belief's. Same with hoodies, its all anti-social behaviour and unneccessary. The veil isn't compulsory and i have no problem with there muslim dress, just the lack of facial expression- thus the lack of an individual, no personality all adds to segregation.

If I was to wear a balaclava next time I popped down the high street I think a lot of people would be intimidated and I'm not even sure my bank would let me in unless I took it off.
It's exactly the same for veils, it's impolite and anti-social. Of course that's the point, as it was a method of trying to keep women from going out and having lives, in a similar way to how there used to be men in this country who wanted their wives to stay at home all day and just look after them. Luckily in this country there have been changes in that department so it isn't acceptable to try to subjugate women thus, but that hasn't as yet happened in most Muslim countries, and when people move here they take the sexist elements of the culture with them.
Now, I think that, if you come to a country to live and receive the benefits of living in a country, you shouldn't do things which are considered anti-social or intimidating in said country, just out of politeness. That's not to say one shouldn't show their own culture, but they should also adapt to the culture of the country in which they're staying.
Would Muslims find it acceptable for an Englishwoman to go to a Muslim country and wear sexually provocative clothing in the street? I really doubt it, and with good reason as it contrasts with the local culture and values. In the same way so does wearing the veil here contrast with culture and values.
Another effect of the veil is that it practically imposes segregation. It's a wall that shuts of wearers from the rest of the non-veil wearing world. I thing we should be trying to promote integration rather than ending up with black or indian suburbs, and the veil doesn't help these matters.

Why does a bride at a Christian wedding wear a veil??
Why does a Priests wear an outfit like a KKK gown!!
If Western women want to go around with their boobs etc hanging out (as if they are on sale), so be it!
I am not Muslim, I'm atheist, this doesn't mean that I don't have any self respect! Unlike a lot of Western women!!
I don't like any religion Whether it may be Muslim Christian or any other, I think they are all nutters!!
As for Jack Straw, the only reason he raised the point was to get a few sympathetic ears, he is just another politician on the make, and in my opinion he is way up in the top 10 creeps in government at the present time.
By all means bash religion but lets bash it all, I think I will start a Bash the Christians week, yes great idea !
I think its very intimidating seeing a guy walking the street wearing a white plastic dog collar!! is it some sort of fetish?? What does he really get up to at night, any whips involved?? Or choir boys???

Agree with your thoughts entirely.I feel it is all part of the plan. So many English emigrating, made possible by us now being part of Europe. At the same point in history, we have large influx of alien cultures. I have no problem with that, apart from the unwillingness to accomodate the host culture. If I were to go and live in a, say, predominantly Catholic country, I like to think I would not only respect the fact I had been accepted into their land, but that I would have the utmost respect for their beliefs and show courtesy towards their traditions. If this meant putting myself out, then so be it.I do hope the current furore dies down, and that our government stops being so lily-livered.

First of all , there's the veil which is simply a head cover and the burka which only shows your eyes. There's very little (if any) religious basis for the burka, it's a cultural thing and I agree with it being intimidating. I think it's necessary to show your face when you're dealing with people. As for the veil, many muslim women believe that it's one of their religious duties. You can't really compare them to hoodies because for a woman who has chosen to wear the veil, it's a symbol of the way of life she has chosen. If you think that it's anti-social for the muslim woman to wear this head cover , then I suspect you have issues with christians wearing crucifixes and jews wearing yarmulkes, too. Besides, when it comes to integrating themselves into the english culture, I don't think what they wear is the make-or-break issue involved.

I agree totally with Jack Straw. In some stores and shopping centres, they will not allow people to even enter if the are wearing hoods, so why should the rules be different for these muslims. I am not a racist person, but I do believe if they want to live in our country, they should abide by our rules, we have to if we go over to their country. How do we know that it's not Bin Laden under those burka's ? The honest answer is WE DON'T!!!!!

at the same time as some might want to correctly be confident that masking up is a reduce and a capture 22 situation, many females in the muslim international embody the hijab willingly. a number of those females are new converts, who sense a opt to cover up. In so doing, we'd want to no longer overlook that those females are closer in dressing to Mary, the mum of Jesus, than present day Christians as we talk. seem on the images of Mary - what's masking her head? Do you no longer see a hijab?

I do not feel threatened by this, people are scared of what they dont understand, try to get info onn the reasons behind it.
No one tells you how to dress, it is like asking a scotsman not to wear his kilt, traditional dress it is called. A difference with ku klux outfits is what ku klux represents, i have no problem with peop;e wearing what they like, where do people get off telling others how to live or how to dress.how would you like it if you went to there country and they harrased you because you would not wear a veil would you wear one in there country to respect there way of life.
Leave them in peace, let them live their life the way they want. no one tells you how to live so dont do it to them

Well, this is what religion does to you. Not only do they accept that it is okay to where humiliating, discriminating apparel that marks them as inferior chattel, they insist on their right to do so!
This is where I disagree with the idea of banning the veil, unless there are good H&S or other rational reasons. You can't, unfortuantly, legislate against stupidity, you would only fuel the fervour by inculcating a persecution complex. I just hope that the theocratic mindset will eventually wither away.
