I was thinking of opening a large farm type resort. Having many different kinds of animals, as well as a restaurant. I think it's a cool idea but I know sometimes I can be weird. So, my question is, if you were planning a vacation, would you consider a farm type atmosphere with horses to ride, a pond to fish in, cabins to stay in? This will take a lot of money to put together, so, I could use opinions.

Yeah, well the whole idea of being on a vacation is to not be in the rat race. You can milk the cows, gather eggs, fish, swim (in a swimming pool, not the pond). Where I am from there are a lot of historical places to visit and the nearest shopping mall is only about an hour away. But, I am open to suggestions. Any ideas for recreation on this farm?

Double JJ is way bigger than I had thought about being. But I like their ideas. I was thinking more in the area of 100 acres. That looks much bigger than what I had thought of. But I will be calling them for ideas, thank you.

I would probably consider to farms that cultivate fruits and greens. Animals .. might reconsider what type of animal farms.
Chances are I will like to go to a serene green environment, not too noisy (some duck quaking in the pond is ok , I am from urban city life & I like some quite times if possible). I like the idea of strawberry/ peach / apple , fruits farms where I can pick myself and stroll along the country plains. I like cool breezy air but not cold wintery type. If possible no mosquitos or biting insects sanctuary nearby the vacation resort would be nice.
Of course do put some other entertainments apart from just farms visit. City dwellers still enjoys the amenities they are accustomed to in their daily life like internet, pools, PS2 games, restaurants ( western, eastern cuisine) , karaoke, gym, sauna, traditional herbal massage or aromatherapy. Some kind of retreat.
I am sure it will be marketing points for your soon to be opened resort. If you do go on with the project, do let me know I will like to pay a visit.

This is what you would call a "niche vacation". It kind of ranks up there with the dude ranch experience. They can be fun but it might not appeal to all crowds. One thing is for sure, if youre going to do this you will NEED something unique that sets you apart from all other "Farm" vacations. My suggestion would be to be something more specific like a horse ranch, or a dairy farm, or a country life experience with a barn concert. Whatever the idea it has to be unique.
I am a travel agent and there are very few dude ranches listed along side the mainstream resorts mainly because of its specific nature.
Go on my website and look up "vacations", and you'll see what I mean.
Good Luck with your venture!

O my gosh, I for sure would, my family and my mother 2 sisters 7 kids, ages 4, 7,17, 18,19, 20, 20, all went to this Ranch called double J & J Ranch in Mi, it was so much fun, tuns and tuns of activity, you can even bring your horses if you want because of course they have horse back ridding, pigs walking around, cow boys on horses the whole works. It's a very nice resort they have cabins or camping. What I think you should do is visit this place and see if you might want to do something like this. Of course this is a huge resort, why don't you visit this website http://www.doublejj.com, its in Rothburry Michigan, phone # 231-894-4444. Good luck, I hope your dream comes true.

Where you plan to locate this farm and what types of recreation you offer would be important. Near scenic areas, trails to ride using horses or camels or even 4-wheelers, river nearby for rafting, swimming pool, would the pond be big enough for boating, dancing and etc. Appeal just for adults or for whole families.
What types of foods would you serve in the restaurant and what type of atmosphere. ?Entertainment and etc
These are only a few things. It would be a big undertaking.
Good luck if you do do it.

I live on a farm so a vacation for me generally means staying away from anything that can't flush a toilet. However I do know a lot of "town" people who would find this interesting.
Your idea has merit! This would be a very large and costly plan that would also require a lot of workers. Best of luck!

I don't know if I would go there, but I live in the country and have animals and don't need to go there. But, I think that people who live in cities who want their children to experience what it might be like on a farm would likely enjoy it. You would have to market it to the right people and offer things people would enjoy doing on vacation. maybe swimming, hayrides, bonfires, ect.... Good Luck!

I would never do that, but I think a lot of people would - especially people who live in big cities that came from small towns and need to get away from the rat race.

I think it isnt a bad idea, but you have to have a good area. It should not just be a Range were people sit and watch or ride a horse. It also should have things that are also good for junger people or older people. Just think about it.

I did when I was a kid. My strongest recollection was watching a cow stick the tip of her tongue up into her nostril to lick it. Would I ever go back after seeing that? Not very likely
