I go to several a year normally when the invite is Black Tie Optional - below the knee is acceptable. Black tie only events the women wear floor length. Do not go for just sexy - go for classy and tasteful, you can't lose.
PS - Do not wear a halter dress

I would suggest a knee to floor length dress as this allows you to add more color and wear flirtier dresses, but if you want to wear something shorter like a knee or higher, I would stick to basic black with no embellishments on the dress itself. Add all the bling you want, but adding color or embellishment with the dress looks way too informal.
Hope I've helped!
PS- If you want to wear a shorter black strapless dress, wear either a very large necklace that ends just above the neckline of the dress, or a scarf just draped across the front of your neck with the tails hanging in back. The necklace should match the rest of your jewelry. The scarf should be a dark color.

It relies upon on the gown. A knee length cocktail gown is totally high-quality for black tie. A knee length gown you may positioned directly to the workplace would not artwork at a black tie affair. the considerable right here is the cocktail gown, greater glamorous, greater formal, needless to say no longer meant for sunlight hours...it quite is a sturdy guess.

I would opt for a floor length but it's acceptable to wear something shorter too. Good Luck and Have a Great Time!

nothing above the knee traditionally. Once the dress goes above the knee then it becomes informal. But bascially a knee length dress can be just as glamorous as a floor length gown.

Knee length dress at least. Opt for a halter dress. Last year I wore a black halter dress with an asymmetrical bottom. It was really sexy.

It depends on how old you are. Otherwise it doesn't matter. Take a look at these three leading ladies of all ages in black tie dresses.
You can do any of these

Typically when we have blacktie functions for our doctors, I go with knee length. I don't do floor length...just too 'stuffy' for me...and some of the wives of docs (and female docs) have even opted for pantsuits.
