These days, 1 GB is generally enough. 2 GB for the extremely high-end games.
Usually the speed for games is much more a measure of CPU and your video card. If your system is already fine with running general programs, then the extra RAM would probably not help much

A gaming pc has minimum: 1 gig ram, cpu at more than 2 mHz, and a video card with 128 ram on it. Minimum. Better would be 2 gig ram, 3 mHz cpu, vid card w/256.
Computer performance speed is a function of more than cpu speed and ram...it also involves the front side bus of the mainboard [how fast data moves from part to part], the architecture of the cpu in addition to the "speed," and thing like how many services and applications are running concurrently, the specs of the hard drive and optical drives, the amount of fragmentation of the hard drive.....
You currently are stuck with the hardware you have. Getting more ram for it would not really make the computer faster, although some games might perform somewhat better, depending on the type of vid card. Game performance is very vid card dependent.
You can speed up your computer first by keeping the hard drive defragmented [Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Defragmenter]. You can also overclock your cpu, but this is a technically more advanced procedure and could seriously ruin your computer if not done right and within the right limits, and you might not get much more improvement to be worth it anyway.
Google "gaming computers" and examine the specs at the sites you find. E.g., Alienware and Dell are easy to find and show what they consider gaming machines. They are expensive, but you can get the parts they use or items with similar specs for much less online. For that, go to newegg.com and check out upgrading. That also will cost, but much less than buying a pre-built name brand computer...

A decent amount of RAM for any good gamer is at least 1 GB, 2 GB is possible. The cost of your RAM will depend on which manufactuer's product you buy, the speed of your RAM, and the type of RAM (single channel, dual channel, DDR, DDR2, etc.). I would estimate that if you were to add another 1 GB to your computer it would probably cost around $150 or so. Getting more RAM does not necessary boost your computer's speed up, it just allows the computer to be able to call for more memory, especially when multi-tasking. The best way to speed a computer up is to buy a new processor.

Memory generally will make your newer games run a lot better. Memory is a lot more complicated than simply more=better.
A general good practice is to match your memory to run it dual channel (this is different than dual channel memory also known as DDR2). To run your memory dual channel, you need matching memory (i.e. 2 sticks the same size running the same timings) running in parrallel slots on your motherboard - you can find which slots are considered parallel by looking at the manual for your motherboard, they are not necessarily next to eachother on the board.
Tight timings will also make the 'same' memory run faster - a stick of DDR500 with 2-2-2-5 timings will run faster than a stick of DDR500 3-3-5-12 timings. But knowledge on this is generally not needed. A basic rule of thumb for memory is: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR - cheap memory will perform cheaply.
As stated above, a quality video card will dramatically increase your game performance. Generally you would want a GeForce 6x00 and up or ATI X8xx and up with 256 mb memory. Again, there are countless variables in here, but spending over $125 on a video card may be overkill if you are not a hardcore gamer.
My advice, buy a set of 2 QUALITY 512 mb sticks that have decent clock speeds, most likely will run you around $150. Run those dual channel and sell your mashup of memory that equaled 896 mb on eBay to cut your costs. Also, upgrade your video card if it is older that an nVidia 6xxx series or ATI X8xx series.
Also, buy good brands! I recommend G.Skill, Patriot, Corsair, OCZ and mushkin.

Depends on the game. Solitaire or Majong don't need much RAM. The latest megagames are RAMhogs. 4 or 6 gigs easy. But it also depends on the chipset and the CPU. And a killer video card with lots of onboard RAM. 256 minimum. Rule of thunb: the latest games take the most RAM and newest CPUs. Again, you want speed, buy the latest chips. Also the best motherboard. Abit and Asus are right up there. Excellent for overclockers. (Google "overclocking" if you're from Rio Linda...LOL)

definite, 32-bit variations of residing house windows can in difficulty-free words cope with a optimal of three.5GB of RAM. i somewhat play international of Warcraft on a touch old gadget with 512MB of RAM and it runs advantageous, if slightly sluggish. 2GB might want to be perfect. in spite of the actual incontrovertible truth that the RAM might want to be advantageous, this is no longer the biggest characteristic at the same time as questioning about video games, extra important might want to be the Video Card and any VRAM positioned on it. The CPU speed also be severe sufficient to play the game. If it is a unmarried center gadget 2.8Ghz+ is an outstanding speed. in case you bypass the Run menu and variety "dxdiag" might want to you tell me what Processor you've (gadget Tab) and the call of your video card (exhibit Tab)

If your motherboard will handle it I would recomend going for 2GB. You can find ram for about $100 a gig nowadays on newegg.com. You will see a difference for sure when you upgrade.

1gig of ram is overkill for most games, you just need to make sure you have a good graphics card to get the job done.
