My students want to use them as game pieces, but they're not hardening. Can they be baked in the oven or left overnight to dry? We're worried they might crack and look bad. What are our alternatives?

They probably will crack and look bad. I'd use Sculpey (pretty cheap when on sale) which you can bake in the oven, or Crayola Model Magic clay (the sculpey will feel more "real"--the Model Magic weighs almost nothing wet or dry, but it can be painted, so that's a plus).

It will not take heat well. It will dull the color and crack. Also, while in the oven, it will melt and change shape; upright pieces will bend over and melt. Bad idea. Let it air dry completely. Placing it in front of a heating vent will help speed air drying. But that might crack it too; it's a 50-50 chance. Unfortunately, drying the stuff takes time. No 100% reliable shortcuts.
