i have been out of an abusive relationship for over a year now and i still get scared when people argue, i think that it will go further then words, also i am scared that when i get back into a relationship with someone else that i will then be violent towards them, which i never was before (i used to fight back/defend myself with my ex that is).
my mind blanks most of it out, but parts pop up every now and then.
any help?

It does take a long time, and professional help is needed to overcome the thoughts and feelings.
I have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) from being abused by my ex, and am still in therapy after more than 6 years. I too dated a couple times since, but it wasn't time or right, still feel very vunerable and afraid of men, no violent thoughts from me towards them...I highly recommend therapy to help you...and no dating for a while...stay focused on yourself, learn to love yourself again, and meditate...good luck.

I have the same problem, I'm in therapy for a support system. I try to find outside interest to keep me off my past. Arts and crafts, gardening and spending time with my children. I try to remember to good times, every time I think of our fights. You should also take dating very slow, you don't have to jump back into another relationship. Everyone handles things differently, so there is no wrong answer.

Time heals all wounds. Had a daughter who had an abusive husband. Gave her a baseball bat and she reasoned with him. Now she has no abuse and her monthly check is never late.

YES WITH TIME AND COUNCILING.
I STILL OCCASIONALLY FLINCH WHEN SOMEONE RAISES THEIR HAND. IT HAS BEEN 13 YEARS AND MOST MEN SCARE ME. MY HUSBAND IS VERY PROTECTIVE OF ME AND MAKES ME FEEL VERY SAFE. WITH HIS HELP AND LOVE I HAVE OVERCOME MOST OF MY FEARS.
