I'm trying to write a poem about dying, but I don't want it to sound ridiculous.

Yes, fitting into the coffin is important....they could still have their arms placed at their sides, though.

I have seen people buried in several different positions with their arms crossed and also with their arms directly down on their sides. or even with their hands clasped across their groin area. Probably just the way the funeral homes feels that particular person looks best. It is after all about the appearance. God bless

Guess what dear? People are no longer buried with their arms across their chest. I know because I have buried 4 family members in the last year. People are now buried with their arms laying at their sides or with their hands laying on top of each other. It looks natural.

I've never seen anyone buried with their arms over their chests. All of the funerals I've been to, the people had theirs arms either at their sides, or two friends of mine were holding flowers in their laps, kind of. If you have a lap while you're laying down. Hope this helps.

I am only guessing, but I think this is a carry over from Europe, where graveyards were much more crowded than here in the US, when we started settling this country. A person takes up less room when their arms are crossed, so you can cram more people into a gravesite. Now it is just done for the sake of antiquity.

I've seen people with their arms at their sides, people holding items in their hands that loved ones have placed there. It's just the family's preference I think. What I don't understand is, why they put glasses and shoes on the deceased? Do they think they're going to read and go for a walk in there?
