The song how to save a life is about Slade's time that he worked as a mentor at a troubled teen camp.
This is from USA Today
"Bittersweet inspiration: The song How to Save a Life was influenced by Slade's experience working as a mentor at a camp for troubled teens. "One of the kids I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. And no one could write a manual on how to save him. ... I got a lot of e-mail about it. One kid died in a car accident, and I guess it had been the last song he downloaded from his computer. They played it at his funeral, and some of his friends got 'Save a life' tattooed on their arms. The response has been overwhelming."
The kid in the car accident was Colin Fahrenkamp. It was the last song he downloaded before he died. After he passed away people started talking about the quiet small acts of courage he preformed to save other lives. They played the song at his funeral, and some even got tattoo of "How to save a life". There's a foundation in Colins name dedicated to saving lives. I know that Colin isn't why the song was written, but I think it is the perfect example of what the song is about.

I think it's about somebody who wants to do an intervention and is reading a self help book, and feels helpless trying to help this person.
Honestly, there are steps involved... I get that feeling.

ummm.... I think it might be about someone breaking up and if they would've known better they would've stayed the night and not let that person kill themself!, but I'm not sure that's just what it sounds like to me!!
