I've been dancing salsa for 3 years and I wear proper Salsa shoes. They do cost a fair bit (mine were £60), but are worth every penny. Once you start dancing in the correct shoes you will never be able to dance in "ordinary" shoes again!
I bought my shoes from this website (although I visited the shop too): http://www.danceworld.demon.co.uk/Menu/Menu%20FP.htm.
If you are new to dancing and don't want to fork out for new shoes just yet, stick to shoes with a slight heel. There should be a strap around the ankle to prevent the shoes coming off, and try to make sure that there is as little grip as possible on the sole - you need to be able to spin quite quickly and shoes that grip will only make it harder.
Above all NEVER, NEVER, NEVER wear trainers!

Freed of London in Covent Garden. They are right next to where Avenue Q plays, but whether they have specific salsa shoes on site, I can't remember. A lot of the friends I made through salsa have bought there shoes out of high street shops (New Look, etc). As long as they are comfortable for swift movement and directional changes and give enough support around the heel/ankle, I can't see them causing you any difficulties when dancing. Just get used to them first.

shoes with a slight heel (chunky is helpful for balance) and straps. You basically want stability and sexiness. It's impossible to dance salsa well in flats.

Trainers make it hard to do some of the twists and turns but high heels make your feet ache after a while. I'd suggest kitten heel; this gives you the support whilst enabling you to do the moves, look stylish and you can walk afterwards!

I'd say that you need a heel to give you the right poise, trainers are for running, not dancing.
