I was thinking about some type of plaque/engraved certificate that they have at like Things Remembered and places like that, any other suggestions though??

Cool! Engraved things are always cool--I think a plaque or certificate might be a little too formal, but Things Remembered has a lot of cool stuff that you can get engraved--pocket watches are special for guys, I think--kind of like jewelry for girls. They also have nice pocket knives that you can get engraved, if that's something he might like. That's a neat guy thing, and it would be extra-special if it were engraved with a message from you. I know some guys who carry them around all the time--kind of a macho thing, because they can always pull them out at a moment's notice if their wife/girlfriend needs something tough cut or opened.
I would take him out to dinner at a nice restaurant (or do something else that he likes--hiking, rock climbing, a day trip, massage, anything where it's just the two of you) and give it to him then. Don't make it all about the sober thing, because even though that's amazing and really great, there's more to him than that. That's a great idea to get him something special, though--I think more people should do that! Hope that helps!

Just remember not to make too much of a fuss...because the one day at a time is the important thing...and not how many years.
Us recovering folks can get so proud of being put up on a pedestal for doing what we should have been doing all along...that we feel like we deserve to celebrate by going out for a drink...and for us, to drink is possibly to die.
Let him know you are pleased with something simple and sincere...and let him know that you hope to rejoice with him about his sobriety for many more years...one day at a time.

I know it sounds mushy, but guys like flowers too. One thing that will be special to him is a very big, sincere, hug and tell him that you are soooooooooooo proud of him. Tell him while you are looking into his eyes. He'll melt.
