We have a water softener in our home, but we believe it is not working properly. Rather than purchase a test-kit, is there an easy test we can do here at home to determine whether or not it is functioning properly? You would think we could tell the difference in the shower, but we just aren't sure. Sometimes we think it works, and sometimes we think it doesn't. We just want to make sure before we call a repair-person out. Thanks!

Put a small amount of bottled water in a saucepan and (carefully) boil it all away and see how much white residue there is. Repeat with tap water and compare. The more white deposit (calcium) there is the harder the water.

I not real sure, but, I would think you see the Toilet start to Stain Brown/Blue depending on the water, if the Filter/Softener not working. I know Soft Water feel soft when you shower, but, as you say, if you not sure all I would know is watch the Toilet.
One thing to try is a teaspoon of Dish-washing soap in a glass of water, but, you may need something to compare with. Soft water will Suds well and Hard water will not.

not common water leaves mineral deposits on the hair, that may grant the hair a brassy or an orange colour to it. It additionally makes the hair greater tough & greater stable to brush. in case you have not common water, it quite is a physically powerful concept to get a Malibu treatment at a salon as quickly as a month, it quite is going to help do away with the mineral build up. you're able to desire to additionally use a Clarifying shampoo (mutually with by utilising Matrix or Paul Mitchell) & a moisturizing conditioner. To make not common water soft, you need to get a water softener & that should help.

Wash your hands with some bar soap and see how long it takes the water to wash the soap off of your hands. If it only takes a few seconds, you have hard water. (The impurities in hard water get your hands cleaner faster.)

You should be able to tell the difference in the shower too. Once you lather up your hair, see how long it takes for the water to rinse it out. If it only takes a few seconds, again, the impurities in the hard water are getting your hair cleaner faster.
