It's possible that you are using "heavy flow" tampons and this is causing your discomfort. Go for the "light flow" or "ultra light flow" kinds and see if this relieves some of your discomfort. You may have to change your tampon more often, but that's safer than leaving it in for too long anyway!
If you can "feel" it then your are most likely not putting it in deep enough . Basically, if you can push it out, or feel it when you squeeze your muscles you need to push the applicator in further before removing the applicator. This can be tricky because your cervix can get in the way if you have it in the wrong position.
Try experimenting a little with the size and the positions and see if that helps! (I've been using them for 16 years (wow, I didn't realize it was so long) and I STILL sometimes don't put it in right and have to redo it!)

Try a smaller tampon and insert it further. You shouldn't be able to feel it at all. my guess is it is to low down and causing you discomfort. If you have difficulty with inserting a smaller or any other tampon try using KY jelly. Personally i use lilets as i find Tampax to long and uncomfortable.
I agree tampons are much better than towels.
Good luck -

you might not be inserting it far enough. Remember, a tampon can never be insterted too far (there's no where for it to go or get lost) so don't worry. You're not supposed to feel a tampon, really. There is the possibility that you're just not used to them, though I don't remember any strange feelings when I started using them.

You are just not inserting it in far enough. Some women fear inserting it too far when they first start using them but you really can't insert them in too far. Try pushing a little more next time you use one and see if that helps. I used to have the same problem and that was the reason. You aren't suppose to feel them at all, until it is time to change it.

Its going to take you a little while to get used to it. My guess would be though, if you can feel it, you are using the wrong absorbancy. If you are a petite girl, maybe go down a size or two at first until you are comfortable with it.

Maybe you are not inserting it far enough. Inserted properly, you shouldn't be able to feel it at all.
Make sure that your fingers are on the grip part of the applicator and that you insert it far enough that your fingers just touch your body. I hope this helps!

Try using the lowest absorbancy possible.
Start with Regular, and inserting them further up.
If you still feel them, try the Junior size.
Hope that helps!

Either it is the wrong size or you are not getting it up in there far enough. You shouldn't be able to feel it.
Good luck!!

I don't think you are doing something wrong, I think you are not used to them yet. Give it a few more tries then if it still bothers you I would try something else.
