hmmmmmm....lets see....!
the west has targeted the east for oil/diamonds and the like under the pretence of 'good will' and 'duty to protect' whilst killing thousands of people and displacing millions more!

Because they see that the West is far more advanced, and they think that because they are the true believers, and not the West, they should be far more advanced.
West knows how to play a game called "Politics", and it is always working to protect its interests. Where in the Muslim world people tend to take things personally, and they get pissed off at the West for playing all those politic games (they only get pissed off because they themselves don't know how to play, and always loose).
If tomorrow they decided "Hey, lets be better then the West, Lets get everyone educated! Lets create! Lets advance to the levels noone has ever advanced to before!" That would be the coolest thing in the world. But instead they will hate us, and they will blame every stupid little thing that goes wrong in their country on us. And they'll just keep on staying in the 14th century.

jealousy, and their leaders fear that they will loss power and control over their people. They know that if the people had a choice they would be out, and freedom would rule.
Until immigration halts with people willing to die to come to our country, we should never stop in our obligation to promote freedom and democracy to all the peoples of the world.
curiosity- it's funny that crap is always the excuse yet, I still have to pay for gas and diamonds are not sold at gas stations for pennies so until that day comes I'd say we don't go to these countries for that purpose.
