I'm currently in the same position as you.

Bought a house with the pre-pay meters in.

What ever you do, DONT go with british gas. I picked the keys up on the 6th october and I still dont have gas connected to the house.

We finally got electric connected on monday, 17 days after we moved in!!!!

Ive booked 3 days off in total to wait in for them to come round and change the meters. And each time they didnt turn up!

British gas are a waste of space, and we are now currently filing a complaint against them.

Ive been told atlantic gas & electric are really cheap.

It's actaully quite simple. Decide what supplier you want for gas, which one you want for electricity (always useful if you choose the same for both), and phone them up. Tell them you're currently on a key meter, and you want to change to monthly direct debit by them. They should come and sort it all out for you. After all, they won't turn down the opportunity for money!

With great difficulty. I tried phoning & writing on behalf of my son, who only had a mobile phone at time. It took many months, to get any real communication with someone at BG. Eventually, after finally agreeing that they did actually supply the electrics, we were told that on payment of £90 up front a meter could be fitted. After two appointments being made (not turning up), a meter was fitted. This took about nine months!! Good Luck.

Contact British Gas and your local Electricity board.

Firstly make sure there is no debt outstanding with these companies.

Then just ask them to come and replace with normal meters.

In my experiance British Gas were fine about this, but the electric company made it difficult, but did it in the end.

Once you are on normal meters fuel you can change to be billed by any company you wish. So we changed to have both provided by British Gas.

Ring your suppliers and get the meters changed - it'll cost you a fortune otherwise because this is the most expensive way to pay via those prepay meters.

Contact the supplier and tell them what YOU want.
If they will not change the meter then tell them that you will switch to another supplier. It is a very easy thing to do.
